$10 million Tunisian Scholarship Fund

Amb Walles meeting with Minister of Higher Education

The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce a $10 million scholarship fund to establish two new programs for Tunisian students to study at American universities and community colleges.  Previous generations of Tunisians studied in the United States and the Embassy is proud to offer this opportunity to the next generation of Tunisian leaders.  The purpose of both study abroad programs is to promote economic development in Tunisia by training talented youth in technical fields related to targeted sectors for development.   The program will further expand the more than 200 years of excellent ties between the Tunisian and American people.  Commenting on the scholarship program, U.S. Ambassador Walles said, “Tunisia’s young people will play a vital role in building a new and prosperous democratic country.  I am confident this program will give them the skills they need to help build the futures they so richly deserve.”

Participants in the Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program will attend one-year of technical study in a specific field at an accredited American university or college.  The curriculum will include a broad survey of liberal arts, community service and hands-on internships.  Current undergraduate students from across Tunisia will be eligible to apply.

Participants in the Tunisia Community College Scholarship Program will attend one year of non-degree based undergraduate study at an accredited American community college.  Fields of study will include: agriculture, applied engineering, business management and administration, early-childhood education, information technology, media, tourism and hospitality management.

Both programs will begin in the 2013-2014 academic year and the scholarships will cover the costs of application, pre-academic English-language training, airfare, medical insurance, room and board and tuition and fees.  Students will be selected according to an open, publicly advertised, nationwide competition to be announced separately.

While it is too early to apply for the Tunisia Scholarship Programs, please visit the U.S. Embassy website: http://tunisia.usembassy.gov/  or email:  TunisiaScholarshipFund@state.gov to express an interest in receiving additional information.
