Foreign Services Institute will Close in June 2012
The Department of State’s overseas Field School for Arabic training in Tunis will close in June 2012 upon completion of the 2011-2012 academic year. After a thorough review of the teaching of advanced Arabic, and in response to students’ interests to provide more flexibility and greater options, advanced Arabic instruction will now be offered in a variety of Middle East and North African regional programs at universities and private institutes. We expect that some students will continue to pursue advanced Arabic instruction at private institutions in Tunis.
The decision to close the Field School, which has been in Tunis since 1975, was a difficult choice, but reflects the increasing availability of regional training options and the added benefit of immersion in the local dialect of each student’s next assignment. The Department of State is committed to high quality and effective language learning and believes that this new approach is practical, pedagogically sound, family-friendly, and will allow its diplomats to best master regional dialects appropriate to the officer’s future assignment.
