2009-2010 Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program


The U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships for young English language educators to teach Arabic and study in the USA for the academic year  2009-2010

 

Purpose:

The FLTA is an opportunity for young teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of American culture and customs while strengthening the instruction of Arabic language at U.S. colleges and universities.

Program sponsors and managers:

The FLTA program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and administered by the American Center and the Institute of International Education in New York.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English;
  • Aged between 21 and 29 years old at the time of application;
  • Have a BA degree
  • Show fluency in English as demonstrated by a minimum TOEFL score of 550
  • Demonstrate proficiency in speaking, writing, and teaching Modern Standard Arabic

Visa status in the U.S.:

Fulbright Fellows live and study in the U.S. on a J-1 Exchange Visitor visa. The Fulbright FLTA Program is a nine-month, non-degree program and is not renewable.

Application:

  • Access your application online
  • Fill out the attached personal information and supplemental question forms;
  • Provide translated and certified copies of all of your university diplomas and official transcripts;
  • Submit three letters of recommendation on-line or in sealed envelopes.
  • Provide a copy of your passport’s bio page

Deadline:

All applications must be submitted on-line before November 21, 2008. Applications submitted after this date WILL not be reviewed.

Group orientation sessions

The American Center will be organizing two group orientation sessions to provide ample information about the subscription process and specific details about the FLTA program.

  • The first group orientation session will be on Wednesday, October 15 , 2008  - 14:00 – 15:00
  • The second group orientation session will be on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 – 14:00 – 15:00

The orientation sessions will take place at the US Embassy.
