AFRICOM Commander’s Visit Highlights Strong U.S.-Tunisian Relations

May 30, 2008 – General William E. Ward, Commander, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), Mrs. Joyce Ward and members of General Ward’s staff visited Tunisia on May 27-28 for consultations with their Tunisian counterparts and on the occasion of Memorial Day.  After attending a Memorial Day ceremony at the North Africa American Cemetery & Memorial in Carthage, General Ward met with Tunisian Defense Minister Kamel Morjane and members of the Tunisian General Staff.  In a May 28 press event at the U.S. Embassy, General Ward underlined the long history of positive relations between Tunisia and the United States, his respect for the capabilities and professionalism of the Tunisian Armed Forces, and the unwavering U.S. commitment to supporting Tunisia and other nations the region in maintaining their own security.

During the visit, Mrs. Joyce Ward visited the APAHT El Walid School for the Handicapped and the APPAI School for Autistic Children, two of nine facilities across Tunisia constructed with the support of the U.S. Department of Defense Humanitarian Cooperation Program in support of the Government of Tunisia's social reform plan for integration of the handicapped.  Mrs. Ward took the opportunity to meet with pupils, parents, administrators and educators, highlighting the responsibility that we all share towards children and expressing her appreciation for the dedication of these associations to the well being of children with special needs.
