An American Author discusses her first Book with Tunisian Language Students

Students discussing live with American Author

At a recent embassy event, Gail Milissa Grant, former US diplomat and first-time author, called her new book, At the Elbows of my Elders, a “love letter” to her parents’ generation.

Part history, part memoir, Grant weaved a narrative of struggle and patience based on her family’s experience with segregation. Following her lecture, students from the Higher Institute of Languages engaged Ms. Grant in thoughtful discussion on African-American literature and the civil rights movement. Asked whether the movement succeeded, she agreed. The events of the 1950s and 60s, according to her, certainly laid the foundation for the election of an African-American president. However, she reminded the audience that the struggle for human rights is ongoing and requires the effort of every generation.

Two copies of Gail Milissa Grant’s book are located in the Information Resource Center. The public is welcome to access the IRC Monday through Friday from 9am to 4:45pm.
