David Black, Arts in Embassies Artist, Visits Tunis and Conducts Workshops

After an initial visit in 2008, American artist David Black returned to Tunisia to conduct workshops for aspiring painters. Black, whose art hangs in the Ambassador’s residence, spent eight days painting with and mentoring artists at Espace Bouabana, a privately owned gallery downtown.
Willing to experiment with a technique developed by the gallery owner, Mr. Black participated in a Brigade d’Intervention Plastique, or collaborative painting exercise. He and the artists began the group effort shortly following his arrival and finished the work 72 hours later, entitling it Night in Tunisia. Black noted that collaborative painting became a way to transcend the individual and build bridges, a theme he emphasized during his stay in Tunis.
Black will exhibit his paintings with five Tunisian artists in New York City early next year.
