FLTA Returnees share their U.S. Experience

From Texas to Massachusetts and everything in between, the Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) alumni have been adding a touch of Tunisia to the United States. These Fulbright Language and Teaching Alumni returned this summer after a year of teaching Arabic and studying in America. Their experiences were as diverse as the landscape across the fifty states, but as they shared cookies and juice with embassy staff this morning it was apparent that some things were true for all of them. They all learned a great deal about the US, but they also learned a lot about themselves as they lived an ocean away from their homes for the first time in a new place. This year’s alumni is an amazing group of students who acted as excellent ambassadors for Tunisia and they undoubtedly left an equally strong impact on their students, colleagues, and friends as their year abroad left on them. The Public Affairs office presented the FLTAs with certificates representing their completion of the year long program and acknowledging the Embassy’s appreciation for their roles helping to build the cultural and linguistic bridge between the United States and Tunisia and strengthening the friendship between our two countries on a personal level.

The FLTA program recruits candidates to teach Arabic at a university in the United States for an academic year. In addition to teaching, FLTAs take courses in English teaching pedagogy and American studies.
