The Government of Tunisia has announced that Tunisian security forces engaged a terrorist group in recent weeks, killing or capturing many individuals who reportedly planned to carry out acts of violence in Tunisia. We understand that the U.S. Embassy in Tunis was among the group’s intended targets. The Tunisian Government reports that security forces have disrupted this group’s activities. For the complete text of the Tunisian official statement, visit the Tunisian government press agency site at www.tap.info.tn.

In light of these events, the U.S. Embassy in Tunis once again reminds all Americans to maintain a high level of vigilance in regard to their personal security and to remain aware of local developments.  We encourage Americans in Tunisia to review the guidance in our Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, dated October 11, 2006, and the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement, dated November 20, 2006.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor the Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, and Travel Warnings can be found. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

The U.S. Embassy in Tunis stands ready to assist U.S. Citizens 24 hours a day. For further information please visit our web site at http://tunis.usembassy.gov or call +216-71-107-000.
